Shutting the Machine Down

Shutting down is a sequence, not a switch. The control takes the machine out of run mode, lets the axes stop and the drives disable, writes what has to survive the power cut, and only then tells you it is safe to switch off.
It can refuse to start, and it can stop part way. Both are worth knowing before you are standing at the machine at the end of a shift.
SHUT DOWN is at the bottom right of the APPS screens.
Before it will start
Section titled “Before it will start”The button is greyed out while the machine is not settled, and the reason is on the screen beside it, before you press rather than after:

A program on feed hold or suspended counts as settled. The axes are parked, so the machine may be powered down from there.
An emergency stop is not a refusal. A machine that has been e-stopped is already stopped, and powering it down from there is a legitimate thing to do.
The stages
Section titled “The stages”Pressing it opens Shut Down Machine?. Confirm, and the panel walks through:

Safe to power off is the one to wait for: it is the control saying the drives are down
and the persistent data is on disk.
When it stops: Shutdown Stopped
Section titled “When it stops: Shutdown Stopped”If a stage does not complete, the sequence stops and says so, and power is not cut. That is deliberate. The decision is yours, and it needs the reason in front of you.

POWER OFF ANYWAY is offered only from this state, and it does exactly what it says: it
cuts power with the failed stage never completed. On the first message, that means cutting
the mains to enabled drives.
Never reach for the mains breaker instead. The breaker does what POWER OFF ANYWAY
does, without the sentence explaining why it is a bad idea.
Cancelling
Section titled “Cancelling”Keep Machine On stops the sequence and puts the control back in run mode. The drives
were already disabled by then, so the machine comes back the way it does after any trip
through configuration. Check what yours needs before cutting again.
What this does not do
Section titled “What this does not do”- It does not switch the machine off. It powers down the control. Mains, drives and the machine’s own contactors are the machine builder’s circuit.
